Putting Tracker Logic and Instruction

Putting tracker was designed to help uncover trends and tendencies with my short game. I always finished a round of golf feeling like I left a lot of opportunities out there but never really sure where. I wanted a way to have the data needed to tailor my practice sessions to be most efficient with my time and make faster progress to lower scores.

The app is designed to make it easy to enter the data from your round and then use logic to infer what happened. I can typically enter the information for each hole as I walk off the green.

Putting Tracker is still in development stages and will get better and easier as time goes on. The goal is to have the least number of taps or clicks on your phone as possible.

Putting Data

Your putting stats are as good as the data you enter. I don't see a need to get a measuring tape out for each putt, but you want to be close. I found it easiest to step off my putts as I would in the fairway - 1 step = a yard or 3 feet.

Looking at the miss section is where it comes down to a user preference. Some players like the putt to die at the hole and others like to putt past the hole to make sure there is a chance. If you hit a putt and miss to the right, is the distance what YOU expected?

Always enter the correct side of the hole. I thought about the idea of selecting your miss based on where you want to hit the putt but this can throw the data off. I found I miss a high percentage of my putts to the right. I can take this data to my coach and see if this is on all slopes, mostly Left to Right (missing on the low side), I have an aim bias that is to the right, or there's a flaw in my stroke that pushes everything.

Putting from the fringe is up to you. Some will say this is technically a chip and others say a putt. Keep your definition of this consistent. I use a putt within a foot of the green and count it as a putt. I'll still mark that as a missed green as these calculations are not related to each other.

Up and Down

I use the UD section to grade my wedge game for chipping and pitching. I consider and U/D anything within 30 yards. I feel like this is an area where I need drastic improvement. Remember the goal here, for me it's to find where I can shave strokes off my score. There are several times in a round where I may have a wedge in my hand and a U/D would yield in a birdie. Or maybe my tee shot found the water and now I'm scrambling for bogey. I want to know if I can get up and down - regardless of my score for that hole.
Each user is different to think about what you want to see later. If you want to see your U/D for saving pars on missed greens, then do so.

Missed Green

Similar to Up and Down, you can determine here if you want to track a true Green in Regulation (GIR) or a Green hit from a certain distance. Just be consistent with your rule and the data will give you what you are looking for.

Fairway Tracking

I was less concerned about this data but thought it was an easy metric to track. For this I am pretty strict on myself and go with the logic of if I hit my intended target. There are times where the fairway may be huge and I want to be on the left, if I hit a big cut and end up on the right side then I mark it as a missed R. The option of OBR and OBL are there if the miss is extreme enough to cost a stroke. Maybe it's a true penalty stroke or maybe you end up in the woods and have to punch out, either way that cost you a stroke.
